What is a Gold Star Family?

A Gold Star Family is the immediate family of a U.S. military service member who died in the line of duty. The term originates from the tradition of replacing the blue star on a family's service flag with a gold star when a loved one is lost in military service.


 

Who qualifies as a Gold Star Family member?

Qualifying members often include:

  • Spouse

  • Parents or legal guardians

  • Siblings

  • Children

Typically, Form DD1300 or DD214 is used to report the status, but it may vary depending on the branch of service.  If they do not have this documentation, they can contact their state's Casualty Assistance officer; if the branch is Army, their Survivor Outreach Services coordinator, SOS Staff Locator | DCS, G-9; or the National Personnel Records office for their heroes ' branch of record, Request Military Service Records | National Archives

 

How can a family prove Gold Star status?

Proof is typically provided through:

  • DD Form 1300 – Report of Casualty (issued by the Department of Defense)

  • State-issued Gold Star identification cards or plates

  • Other service-related documentation


What kind of support is available for Gold Star Families?

Support may include:
